The port is managed by the Freeport of Riga Authority (FRA) – a derived legal entity (public institution). The FRA administers the operation of the port and is responsible for leasing the land and infrastructure of the port to private companies, maintaining public infrastructure and port security.

The Freeport of Riga is a multifunctional ice – free port that handles all types of cargo except for crude oil. Riga is the largest port in Latvia and the second largest port in Baltic States in terms of cargo turnover, with throughput capacity of 63 million tonnes per year. In 2018 cargo turnover at the port reached 36, 4 million tons. Currently the main cargo commodities at the port are: coal (39%), oil products (11%), containerized cargo (14 %) timber and products (15 %), fertilizers (6%), metals and ore (5%) and grain and grain products (5%) In 2018 throughput of containerized cargo overcame 469 thous. TEUs.  The Freeport of Riga offers year round navigation. ~ 73% of cargo handled at the port of Riga in 2018 was transit cargo.Currently 34 stevedoring companies and 31 shipping agencies are operating at the Freeport of Riga. More than 30 companies provide different storage facilities in the territory of the port. Currently 7 container lines provide regular scheduled services: Containerships, Hapaga Lloyd AG, Maersk line/ Seagoline, Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), Unifeeder, Poland – Finland Express 2, X-press Container lines and Tallink, provides regularly scheduled liner services.

The Freeport of Riga is one of the main logistic hubs in the Eastern Baltic Sea region. Location in the centre of the Baltic countries allows to use the Port of Riga as a convenient logistic and distribution centre for the Baltic countries, Scandinavia and the North-West part of Europe. The location within the European Union ensures direct access to the European markets and presents considerable opportunities for the future development, considering the EU goal of creating new rail sea based logistic chains.

Riga is part of the East-West transit corridor, which is linked to the Trans-Siberian Railway. Integration within 1520mm rail gauge transportation system plays important role in trans-continental freight flows, especially containerized cargo and provides quick access to markets in Russia, Belarus, Central Asia and China.

The Freeport of Riga is TEN-T core network port. Distances by sea from the biggest ports of the Central Europe - Rotterdam, Antwerp, Hamburg – to the ports of the eastern part of the Baltic Sea coastline are the shortest, providing advantage with regards to transportation costs and transit time.

The Freeport of Riga offers space for the new business activities providing long-term lease of land on attractive terms (up to 45 years), flexible and competitive port tariffs and dues system. Special Economic zone (Free zone) status offers opportunity to apply for different tax reduction set by a special law.

The Freeport of Riga Authority promotes the development of new business and investment projects at the Port by creating a stable and predictable environment, supporting private businesses, developing the public infrastructure of the Port and taking care of the security of the Port.

Vision and Mission:
